DESCRIPTION
17-19 SEPTEMBER 2027 | 10:00 - 4:00pm WATERCOLOUR COURSE Take a break and explore the beautiful and peaceful environment of Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales with Paul Talbot-Greaves RI. In this three-day course you will learn some easy tips and techniques for finding subject material, you will study what to look for and understand how to arrange harmonious compositions to turn into striking paintings. Working in and around the Swaledale village of Muker and surrounding villages, we will make sketches and take photographs to build references that we will turn into finished paintings in the comfort of the village hall. There may also be opportunities to paint out on location. Please note: You will need to book your own accommodation for this course. There are plenty of BBs and holiday lets in the area, as well as the Keld Lodge hotel. Some of the course will be outdoors. Although we will try to minimise walking any distance, you may wish to bring sturdy footwear, along with warm clothes and waterproofs. LOCATION Muker Public Hall, WHAT TO BRING Paints To follow my colour mixing method it is useful to have ivory black but it’s not essential. Please feel free to bring your favourites, but as a simple guide my regular palette contains Winsor yellow, yellow ochre, cadmium orange, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, perylene violet, Winsor green y/s, viridian, cerulean blue, Winsor blue r/s, French ultramarine, Winsor violet. Other useful colours: titanium white (gouache). Brushes I use natural hairbrushes and synthetic round brushes. It is useful to have one or more French mop types between sizes 4 and 6, one or two medium sized round brushes, and either a small synthetic round or a rigger brush. Palette Either a plastic or ceramic tray, folding palette, or large mixing surface. Paper Saunders Waterford, Arches, Baohong, or any similar cotton paper in either rough or cold pressed (NOT) surfaces. I would recommend working no bigger than 38 x 28cm unless you are confident in applying large washes of paint. Other equipment Sketchbook, camera, your favourite sketching media (I use black and grey Molotow refillable acrylic markers), easel (if desired), fold up chair (if desired), waterpot, palette, Pencils 4B or 6B, putty rubber, kitchen roll, painting board, masking tape, water spray, household sponge wipe (thin moppet type).
