My life...
as a full-time artist spans 30 years, most of it focussing on landscape painting, where I paint the moods and light of my environment, particularly through the use of shadows that change the ordinary into the extraordinary. I have always loved nature, but that's no surprise, as my ancestors were tenant farmers for over 400 years. The landscape is in my blood.
My work can be described as representational in an impressionistic style, but I don’t seek to paint popular views or chase narrative. Instead, I look for alternative views of the land, arranging striking compositions, playing dark against light, and introducing the viewer to pattern and shadow. My training at art school drilled into me an emphasis of design, and over time I have gained a reputation as an artist with a strong flair for striking composition. ​As a result, I aim to connect with my audience by drawing attention to elements of a subject that generally go unnoticed. A lot of my work is sourced from the Yorkshire hills where I live, and I work on site with sketches and photographs, turning them into paintings back in the studio.
